Places

Places, prefixed P in MashBill, are physical places named before December 31, 1865 and locatable with latitude and longitude. Hierarchies of location will include settlement, county, state, and country. Names and boundaries will reflect contemporaneous usage (e.g. 1860s county boundaries).

Cultural regions (e.g. "the South"; “Appalachia”) will not be identified. Houses (e.g. "Ashland"), battlefields (e.g. "Shiloh"), camps (e.g. "Camp Crittenden") and similar informal names will not be individually annotated.

Settlements will include places with post offices, railroad, stage, or steamboat stops identified in contemporary directories. Coordinates for counties, states, and countries will be assigned to their respective seats of government as recognized by federal and state governments.
