Under the late order for recruiting "Veteran Volunteers'' I have been enabled to recruit at least three fourths of the 12' Ky Infty Regiment with the Consideration that they be mounted and in order to ascertain whether this arrangement could be made or not I forwarded two applications one to the Adjt Genl of Ky and the other to the Sec'ty of war through your Department Since which we have learned through Corps Head Q^rs that after the 5^th Jany 1864 the inducements for reenlisting are not so good and as it wil be imposible for us to learn by that time whether our proposition will be accepted or not I would respectfully ask what steps it would be advisable to take as the Regiment will not reenlist as Infantry. If the above proposition is accepted under the first inducements three fourths and verry probably the entire regiment will reenlist but under no other Circumstances

Will you please to give us the necessary information as soon as convenient
