Trumbull County, Ohio, attorney, politician, and soldier. Native of Montreal, Lower Canada. Son of Jacob Dolson Cox and Thedia Redelia Kenyon Cox. Married to Helen Clarissa Finney Cochran Cox in Lorain County, Ohio, on November 26, 1849. Father of Helen Finney Cox Black, Jacob Dolson Cox, D.C. Cox, Kenyon Cox, Charles Norton Cox, and Brewster Cox. Tinner in Lorain County, Ohio, in 1850. Graduate of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio in 1851. Admitted to the Ohio Bar Association in 1853. Attorney in Trumbull County, Ohio in 1860. Served in the Ohio State Senate as a Republican from 1860 to 1862. Served in the U.S. Army as Brigadier General of Volunteers and Major General of Volunteers from May 17, 1861 through December 31, 1865. Served as a division commander in the Union Army's IX and XXIII Corps.
