A Young officer Capt Bacon came to me ^(without any men)^ with an order from H^d Qrs Deptⁿ of the Cumberland worded thus

"IV Capt John Bacon 4^th Ky Cal^y is detailed for recruiting service in Kentucky. He will report in person to the Superintendent of Recruiting for the State and by letter to the Governor."

As I have not the slightest necessity for such an officer and under our present system do not well know how to apply him I would at once send him back to his regiment but that he tells me the detail was made by General Thomas on Governor Bramlette's special request; -- but he lives in Frankfort &^c

I would like to know the facts in the case, and if Governor Bramlette desires to have him near him in the recruiting department for ^U. S.^ if your office to which I might detail him. I will
not assign Captain Bacon or send him back to his regiment until I can have time to hear from you or the Governor on the subject. Please also, anticipate what you may write by a telegraphic communication
