United States soldier. Southampton County, Virginia, native. Married to Frances Lucretia Kellogg Thomas in Troy, New York, on November 17, 1852. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1840. Veteran of the U.S.-Mexican War. Instructor of cavalry and artillery at West Point from 1851 to 1854. Stationed at frontier duty in California and Texas from 1855 to 1860. Served under Robert E. Lee before the fall of Fort Sumter. Helped organize and command the Department of the Cumberland and the Army of the Ohio as brigadier general and major general from August 17, 1861, until the end of the war.
