Kentucky soldier. New York native. Graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in 1833. Chief engineer in Illinois in 1850. Served in the U.S. Army as major from May 14, 1861 to May 1863. Served as assistant provost marshal for the Commonwealth of Kentucky from May 1863 to May 6, 1864. Served in the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel and brigadier general from May 6, 1864 to March 30, 1865.
