I am directed by the Provost Marshal General to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 9^th inst. enclosing a letter of His Excellency Governor Bramlette of Kentucky, of the 8^th inst, and a copy of your communication to Major General U. S. Grant, Commanding Military Division of the Mississippi, of the 9^th inst relative to a conscription order issued by Major Genl Hurlbut, which is in conflict with the law and orders governing the Provost Marshal General's Bureau.

In reply I am instructed to inform you that your communication was referred to the General in Chief who has returned the same with the information that has directed Major Genl Hurlbut to So modify is order as to make it conform with the law and order governing this Bureau.
