Ohio soldier and commander of the Union armies. Point Pleasant, Ohio, native. Born Hiram Ulysses Grant. Son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson. Married to Julia Boggs Dent in 1848. Father of Frederick Grant, Ulysses Grant, Ellen W. Grant, and Jessie Grant. Graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1843. Served in the 4th U.S. Infantry as brevet second lieutenant in 1843, promoted to first lieutenant during the Mexican-American War, assigned to Oregon Territory in 1852. Promoted to captain in 1853 and resigned in April 1854. Farmer in White Haven, Missouri, in 1855. Leather merchant in Galena, Illinois, in 1860. Employed Emily Hodkins as a house servant in Galena in 1860. Appointed colonel of the 21st Illinois Volunteers in 1861. Appointed brigadier general and commander of the District of Southeastern Missouri in August 1861. Promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1862. Appointed lieutenant general and given command of all U.S. armies in March 1864. Accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
