Dr Sir please allow me to drop you a fiew lines on being discharged from the military appointment of Deputy Police I was recomended to Col. Edwards by four letters written by Cols Garrot & Brown Jeneral Harlin and Capt H. I. Todd Major Mahony and several others the above letters was given me some months ago to visit Genl Fry. I done so they were entirely satisfactory but there was nothing I felt competant to undertake at his hand as I dislike to botch business this I do to show your Excellency the grounds for my appointment by Col Edwards I complied strictly with the
the work Contained in the appointment to the 7 april at which my time expired I was directed to report to Genl Lindsey I done so -- I Hunted up some six soldiers one new saddle and a number of arms delivered them over to the quartermaster those arms have heretofore been drawn and not returned of which there are plenty yet out Some of the above soldiers have been absent from their regiments seven months and in this time I have sons in the federal service they would not be favorites nor screand by me acting in a miltary capacity tis true we have a deputy Marshal here he may do all that is proper to do -- well on that matter I say no more your Excellency might ask how
He obtaind his appointment it was obtaind through his father-in-law Capt Martin of Lexington, who was intimate with the marshal of that place without a word against Capt Sheets I tell your Excelleny there are deserters from both armies through our county and very often in our town

N B.. and now govenor you verry properly might want to no what I have done that entiles me to ask the miltary authorities for favor as brief as possilbe I will tell you I have enlisted moore men In the service than another man in town or county I have give moore to the families of soldiers than any ten men in the town and do not regrot it but I was bridge keeper here and burnt of out by the rebels
from my salary also robed of a fine horse & saddle giving me a trifle for him that or nothing to the latter part of this it will be signed

In regard to Mr Finnel chairity to soldiers, and soldiers wifes I can state that he to the best of my knowlede bought at different ^times^ since this unhapy war commenced one hundred and fifty dollars of me for the benefit of the goverment --

Mr. Finel has bought many articals from me for Soldiers and there famileys and I think as good a Union man as any in town
