Ohio attorney and soldier. Ohio native. Son of Thomas Ewing. Attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1844 to 1848. Attorney with his brother, Thomas Ewing, and foster brother, William Tecumsah Sherman, in St. Louis, Missouri. Attorney in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Returned to Ohio in 1858. Appointed to the staff of Ohio Governor William Dennison in May 1861. Served in the 30th Ohio Volunteer Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel from August 1861. Promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on November 29, 1862. Commanded the post of Louisville, Kentucky, from February 1863. Mustered out of the service in 1866.
