Louisville, Kentucky, soldier. Indiana native. Son of William S. Unthank and Nancy L. Unthank. Married to Delia Evans Unthank in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 12, 1861. Resident of Cincinnati in 1850. Resident of Johnson County, Indiana, in 1860. Resident of Louisville in 1861. Served in the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.A.) as a captain from December 24, 1861, to July 19, 1862. Captured in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on June 7, 1862. Prisoner of war from June 7, 1862 to July 21, 1862. Paroled soldier at Camp Chase, Franklin County, Ohio, from July 21, 1862 to December 1862. Served in the 11th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.A) as a captain from November 4, 1863, to July 2, 1865. Captured in Bartow County, Georgia, on May 24, 1864. Prisoner of war from May 24, 1864 to December 18, 1864. Escaped from Columbia, South Carolina, on December 18, 1864.
