Seventeenth Governor of the State of Missouri, attorney, soldier, and politician. Jefferson County, Virginia, native. Son of John Hall and Statira Preble Hall. Married to Ann Eliza Richardson Hall in Buchanan County, Missouri, on October 28, 1847. Father of William R. Hall, Willard P. Hall, John Hall, and M. Hall. Married to Olla F. Oliver Hall in Cole County, Missouri, on June 22, 1864. Father of George O. Hall. Graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1839. Resident of Missouri in 1840. Admitted to the bar in 1841. Circuit attorney in Buchanan County, Missouri, in 1843. Served in the 1st Missouri Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a private and first lieutenant from 1846 to 1847. Member of the United States House of Representatives from Missouri from 1847 to 1853. Household owned seven enslaved persons in Buchanan County in 1850. Attorney in Buchanan County in 1854. Attorney in Buchanan County in 1860. Owned twenty-two enslaved persons in Buchanan County in 1860. Republican Provisional Lieutenant Governor of the State of Missouri from July 31, 1861, to January 31, 1864. Provisional Governor of the State of Missouri from January 31, 1864, to January 2, 1865, following the death of Hamilton Rowan Gamble.
