Father of Evelina Sewall and Joseph E. Sewall. Graduated from Bowdoin College in Cumberland County, Maine, in 1846. Attorney in Lincoln County, Maine, in 1850. Attorney in Sagadahoc County in 1860. Served as Assistant Adjutant General from 1861 to 1862. Served in the 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel from 1862 to 1863. Served in the Veteran Reserve Corps (U.S.A.) as a major and colonel from 1863 to 1865. Commanding officer of Camp Parole in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, from February 1865 to May 1865.
