Montgomery County, Ohio, student. Ohio native. Son of George Van Houten and Gertrude L. Van Houten. Attended school in Madison County, Ohio, in 1850. Laborer in Pickaway County in 1860. Enlisted in the 155th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 2, 1864, but did not muster into the unit. Student at Miami Commercial College in Montgomery County in 1864. Murdered by George Maxwell in Montgomery County on October 6, 1864.
