Thetford, Orange County, Vermont, soldier. Vermont native. Son of Beriah Loomis and Mary Loomis. Married to Annie Loomis. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Orange County, New York. Served in the U.S. Regiment of Artillerists as a second lieutenant and first lieutenant from March 1, 1811 to May 12, 1814. Served in the U.S. Corps of Artillery as a first lieutenant and captain from May 12, 1814 to June 1, 1821. Served in the 1st U.S. Infantry as a captain from June 1821 to July 7, 1838. Served in the 2nd U.S. Infantry as a major from July 7, 1838 to September 22, 1840. Served in the 6th U.S. Infantry as lieutenant colonel September 22, 1840 to March 9, 1851. Served in the 5th U.S. Infantry as colonel from March 9, 1851 to June 1, 1863. Served as head of the general recruiting service at Fort Columbus, New York. Retired from active service on June 1, 1863. Continued to serve in a reserve capacity. Brevetted to the rank of brigadier general to date from March 13, 1865.
