Champaign County, Ohio, teacher, professor, and soldier. Champaign County, Ohio, native. Married to Mary Ann Smart McFarland in Highland County, Ohio, on March 19, 1851. Father of Eliza McFarland and Frances "Fanny" McFarland. Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1847. Public school teacher in Ohio from 1847-1851. Professor of mathematics at Madison College in Guernsey County from 1851 to 1856. Professor and Chair of mathematics at Miami University in Butler County from 1856 to 1862. Employed Bridget Flanigan as a servant in Butler County. Served in the 86th Ohio Regiment (U.S.A.) as a captain from June 1862 to September 1862. Served in the 86 Ohio Regiment Reorganized (U.S.A.) as a lieutenant colonel from July 1863 to February 1864.
