Ohio soldier. Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio, native. Son of John Campbell and Rebecca Snodgrass Campbell. Served in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as first lieutenant from October 31, 1861 to October 27, 1862. Promoted to major and assistant adjutant general of volunteers on October 27, 1862. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 31, 1865. Subsequently brevetted colonel and brigadier general.
