Pennsylvania soldier. Pennsylvania native. Son of John Bertolette and Margaret Bertolette. Resident of Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1850. Law student in Reading in 1860. Served as a second lieutenant in the 6th Pennsylvania Infantry (U.S.A) from April 22, 1861 to July 26, 1861. Served as a first lieutenant and adjutant in the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry (U.S.A.) from October 1, 1861 until February 25, 1862. Promoted to captain and assistant adjutant general of volunteers on February 25, 1862. Subsequently brevetted to the ranks of major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel. Wounded on August 29, 1862, at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
