Ohio County, Kentucky, farmer, justice of the peace, and soldier. Tennessee native. Married to Louisa Duff Mitchell in Grainger County, Tennessee, on October 21, 1849. Father of Margaret Mitchell, Mary Mitchell, James Mitchell, and William Mitchell. Farmer in Grainger County in 1850. Farmer in Ohio County, Kentucky, in 1860. Justice of the Peace in Ohio County in 1861. Served in the 17th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A) as a sergeant and a private from October 25, 1861, to June 3, 1864. Demoted to private on June 25, 1862. Reported as deserted from Bowling Green, Kentucky, on September 8, 1862, until November 17, 1862. Died of gunshot wounds at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on June 3, 1864.
