Carter County, Kentucky, farmhand and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of Aaron Newell and Margaret Newell. Student in Carter County in 1850. Farmhand in Carter County in 1860. Served in the 22nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as private and corporal from December 12, 1861. Reported as deserted from Grayson County, Kentucky, on October 1, 1862. Sentenced by court martial and transferred to the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.), serving as private until February 27, 1865.
