Fayette County, Kentucky, statesman. Virginia native. Married to Lucretia Hart Clay in Lexington, Kentucky in April 1799. Father of Theodore W. Clay, James B. Clay, Susan Hart Clay, Anne Brown Clay, Thomas Hart Clay, Henry Clay, Jr., and John M. Clay. Elected to the Kentucky State Legislature in 1802. Defense attorney for Aaron Burr upon charges of conspiracy in Fayette County in 1806. Appointed to the United States Senate by the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Kentucky on December 29, 1806. Elected to the United States House of Representatives and elected speaker of the house in 1811, 1813, 1815, and 1817. Nominated for president of the United States in 1824. Appointed secretary of state of the United States of America by John Adams in 1825. Elected to the United States Senate in 1830, and appointed president of the Senate of the United States in 1831. Nominated for president of the United States in 1844. Statesman in Fayette County in 1850.
