Owsley, Kentucky, farmer and soldier. Kentucky native. Married to Mary Herd. Father of Jesse Herd, Hampton Herd, Andrew Herd, and Rachel Herd. Farmer in Owsley County, Kentucky, in 1860. Served in the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as first lieutenant from August 19, 1861, to July 24, 1862. Served in the 14th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as captain and lieutenant colonel from August 4, 1862, to March 24, 1864.
