Alexandria, Virginia, General. Westmoreland County, Virginia, native. Son of Henry Lee III and Anne Lee. Married to Mary Custis Lee in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 30, 1831. Father of George Washington Custis Lee, Mary Custis Lee, William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, Anne Carter Lee, Eleanor Agnes Lee, Robert Edward Lee Jr., Mildred Childe Lee. Graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1829. Served in U.S. Army as lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, lieutenant colonel, and colonel, from 1829 to 1861. Served in C.S.A. as brigadier general, general, and general-in-chief of the army from 1861 to 1865. President of Washington College from 1865 to 1870.
