Newport, Kentucky, student, soldier, and teacher. Kentucky native. Son of Nathaniel Burger Shaler and Ann Hinde Southgate Shuler. Graduated from Harvard University on July 8, 1862. Served in the 5th Kentucky Volunteer Artillery Regiment (U.S.A.) as captain from 1862 to 1864. Taught zoology and geology at Harvard University in 1865.
