Teacher at Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 1860. Colonel in the 33rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) in 1861. Division commander in the Army of the Ohio as brigadier general in 1862.
