Oldham County, Kentucky, attorney, merchant, and soldier. Russellville, Kentucky, native. Son of John Jordan Crittenden and Sarah "Sally" Lee Crittenden. Married to Katherine "Kittie" Todd Crittenden. Father of John J. Crittenden. Admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1840. Elected commonwealth’s attorney in Kentucky in 1842. Served in the Kentucky Infantry as a private from August 17, 1836, to September 18, 1836. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry in the U.S.-Mexican War from October 4, 1847, to July 21, 1848. Consul to Liverpool, England, from 1849 to 1853. Merchant in Oldham County, Kentucky, in 1860. Served in the U.S. Army as brigadier general and major general from September 27, 1861, to December 13, 1864.
