Union Army soldier. Virginia native. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1825. Served in the U.S. Army as lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel from 1825 to 1866. Served in the 7th U.S. Infantry. Served as disbursing agent of Indian affairs from 1832 to 1834. Served as adjutant general and aide-de-camp to General Mathew Arbuckle. Served as chief mustering and disbursing officer for the state of Kentucky from March 1862 to September 1863. Served as chief mustering and disbursing officer in the Department of the Pacific from October 1863 to January 1864.
