Lorain County, Ohio, engineer and soldier. Ohio native. Married to Mary Gillmore. Father of Quincy Gillmore, Edward D. R. Gillmore, William B Gillmore, and Gregory Gillmore. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1849. Engineer at Hampton Roads. Instructor at West Point from 1852 to 1856. In command of fortifications in New York Harbor from c1849 to 1861. Captain of engineers in August 1861. Rebuilt the forts after the capture of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Lieutenant Colonel in April 1862. Received commands in Kentucky in August 1862, where he defeated General Pegram at Somerset in March 1863. Promoted to Colonel. Given command of the Department of the South in June 1863. Promoted to Major General by July 1863 for the capture of Fort Wagner. Commanded the 10th Corps in 1864. Commanded part of the 19th Corps in July 1864. Returned to command the Department of the South in 1865 until the end of the war.
