St. Louis, Missouri, teacher and soldier. Native of Sinsheim, Baden, Germany. Son of Moritz Sigel and Anna Marie Pauline Lichtenauer Sigel. Married to Elise Dulon in January 1854. Father of Robert Sigel, Paul Sigel, Rudolph Sigel, and Lelia Sigel. Graduated from Karlsruhe Academy in Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1843. Attended law school at Heidelberg University. Soldier in Army of Grand Duke of Baden from 1843 to 1848. Commander of Freikorps battalion of German revolutionaries from 1848 to 1849. Appointed minister of war in provisional government of Liberals in 1849. Language tutor and fencing instructor in New York from 1852 to 1853. Opened a cigar store in New York in 1853. Commissioned a major in the 5th New York Militia in 1854. Professor at the German-American Institute, or Feldner School, in New York from 1855 to 1857, and the Deutsches Institut in St. Louis from 1857 to 1861. Member of the Turner Society in New York and St. Louis. Co-founder of monthly journal the Interpreter. Served in the 3rd Missouri Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as colonel from May 4, 1861, to May 16, 1861. Served in the U.S. Volunteers as brigadier general from May 17, 1861, to March 21, 1862, and as major general from March 21, 1862, to May 4, 1865.
