Married to Henrietta Shackelford. Attorney in Hopkins County in 1860. Served in the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant and first lieutenant in the U.S.-Mexico War. Attorney in Louisville. Served in the 25th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel from January 1, 1862, to March 24, 1862. Served in the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel from September 13, 1862 to January 2, 1863. Appointed brigadier general of Volunteers on January 2, 1863. Commanded forces that captured General John Hunt Morgan at Salineville, Ohio, on July 26, 1863. Resigned his commission on January 18, 1864.
