Served as private, second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, major, and colonel in the United States Corps of Engineers from 1825 to 1865. Professor of geography, history, and ethics at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point in 1825. Captain of West Point engineers in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1850.
