New York engineer, surveyor, teacher, businessman, soldier, and politician. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native. Married to Mary Ellen Marcy McClellan in New York, New York, on May 22, 1860. Father of Mary McClellan and George Brinton McClellan. Attended the University of Pennsylvania. Graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point in 1846. Commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Served as a brevetted first lieutenant and captain in the 1st Cavalry in the Mexican-American War until January 16, 1857. Chief engineer and vice president of the Illinois Central Railroad. President of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad in 1860. Commissioned as the Ohio militia major general of volunteers on April 23, 1861. Served in the Regular Army as major general from May 3, 1861, to November 1, 1861. Served as general-in-chief of the Armies of the United States from November 1, 1861, to November 5, 1862. Nominated as the Democratic candidate for President in 1864.
