Carlinville, Illinois, attorney, major general, and Military Governor. Eagle Creek, Kentucky, native. Attorney in Carlinville, Illinois in 1840. Delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1847. Member of the state senate from 1852 to 1854. Delegate to the National Republican convention at Philadelphia in 1856. Presidential elector to the Republican ticket of 1860. Delegate to the Peace convention at Washington, February 4th, 1861. Served in the Fourteenth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry as colonel, brigadier-general, and major-general from 1861 to 1866. Served as Military Governor of Kentucky in early 1865.
