New York soldier. New York native. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1854. Served in the 2nd United States Regular Artillery as a captain.Served in the United States Volunteers under General Don Carlos Buell as a major, lieutenant colonel, and assistant adjutant general in 1861. Chief of staff of the VI Corps during the Battle of Antietam. Transferred to the Regular U.S. Army and served the remainder of the war as assistant adjutant general in the Department of the Missouri.
