California soldier. Busti, New York, native. Married to Mary Oliver Hardisty Stoneman. Father of Cornelius Stoneman, George Stoneman, Jr., Katherine Stoneman, and Adele Stoneman. Attended Jamestown Academy in Jamestown, New York. Graduate of West Point Military Academy in 1846. Quartermaster in the Mormon Batallion at Santa Fe in 1847. Appointed Chief of Cavalry in the Army of the Potomac (U.S.A.) in August 1861. Served in in the U.S. Army as brigadier general, major general, and brevetted colonel from August 13, 1861, to September 1, 1866. Adjutant to George B. McClellan.
