McCracken County, Kentucky, store clerk, sailor, and soldier. Mason County, Kentucky, native. Son of James Byers and Anna Maria Johnston Byers. Married to Jane Leeper Johnson Byers in Livingston County, Kentucky, on November 16, 1854. Father of John Byers, James Byers, and Elizabeth "Mema" Byers. Served in the U.S. Navy as midshipman on the steamer Mississippi, the sloop Vincennes, the Somers, the Vandalia, and the frigate Congress, from 1841 to August 13, 1849. Bookstore clerk in McCracken County, Kentucky, in 1860. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (C.S.A) as captain from July 19, 1861, to 1863.
