Franklin County, Kentucky, attorney and commonwealth's attorney. Frankfort, Kentucky, native. Son of Samuel I. M. Major and Martha H. Bohannan Major. Member of the Episcopal Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. Educated in the private academy of Burwell B. Sayre in Frankfort. Graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1842. Founding member of Chi Psi fraternity. Studied law with Thomas B. Monroe, Sr., and Charles S. Morehead. Admitted to the bar in 1844. Member of the Democratic Party. Attorney in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1850. County attorney for Franklin County, Kentucky, from 1852 to 1856. Commonwealth's attorney for the 8th Judicial District of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1856 to 1862. Member of the Masonic Order in Kentucky and International Order of Oddfellows.
