Iowa attorney, businessman, land investor, and soldier. Indiana native. Attended Bloomington College in Bloomington, Indiana. Studied law and admitted to the bar in 1939. Attorney in Fort Madison, Iowa, from 1839 to 1849. Prosecutor in a five county area in Southeast Iowa from 1840 to 1842. President of the Des Moines Valley Railroad Company from 1849 to 1853. Served in the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as colonel from February 22, 1862. Promoted to brigadier general on April 9, 1863, and commanded a brigade of the XVII Corps in Louisiana comprised of black and white soldiers. Commanded the District of Cairo from October 1863, to March 16, 1864. Relieved of command and resigned from the army on April 4, 1864. Returned to Des Moines, Iowa, and resumed his work with the Des Moines Valley Railroad Company.
