Mercer County, Kentucky, attorney, soldier, and politician. Harrodsburg, Kentucky, native. Son of John B. and Nancy Robards Thompson. Married to Martha A. Montgomery Thompson. Father of Davis M. Thompson, Philip “Little Phil” Burton Thompson, Jr., and John Burton Thompson. Educated at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and Jefferson College in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania. Admitted to the bar in 1840 and practiced law in Mercer County, Kentucky. Member of the Whig Party. Served in the Second Regiment Kentucky Foot Volunteers as a captain from 1846 to 1847 during the US-Mexico War. Member of the Council of Ten in the Provisional Government of Kentucky. Member of the Committee on Banks and Committee on Military Affairs for the provisional government of Kentucky. Received gubernatorial pardon on September 2, 1865.
