Dear Sir under the most destressing circumstances that a people ever lived under we are the peculiar Suffering people at this time I am writing this to See if I can invoke or call fourth your aid to protect us from the Guerrillas of our state we or at least Some of us will be ruined if we are not Spedily relieved from the desperation of these out laws if we can git our State Guard laws put into affect we can make them eficient in cleaning out these out laws their has been an attempt made by Capt P. S. Bush to raise a company of volunteers and failed we will have to resort to a Draft I think if we git any aid in time to ^do^ us much good in the way of Saving our property I have had Ten horses taken from me by them and do not exspect I am exempt yet I can raise Twenty or Twenty five men in my neighborhood thats willing to go in this business to effectually put down these Devils if you have any feeling for Suffering humanity come to our assistance So that we may have Some assurance of Keeping what little we make I want you to write and let me Know the best means can be devised by which this thing of Guerrillaing can be suppressed I will take the lead and cleand out Metcalfe county if you will give me the proper and legal authority please write Soon and give me all the necessary information on the Subject So I may no what arrangements to make in this thing we want arms and Subsistance horses &c. and wel would ^be^ ready to opperate in a few days very Respectfully your friend

Complains grievously of depredations of guerillas, and asks that the State Guard Law be put into operation. Says Capt. P. S, Bush undertook to raise a Company but failed; will have to resort to the draft; can raise 25 men, and effectually put down guerillas; ~~and~~ wants information in regard to recruiting, and wants arms, ammunition, subsistence, horses, &^c
