May I beg leave to utter a few truths respecting Young Coleman Spencer Daniel, a private in the 15^thKentucky Regiment. I have Known him intimately from his earliest breath until now, and I do not know a nobler, nor a more worthy young man in this Commonwealth. He has a fine mind, an unblemished integrity, and one of the best natural dispositions I have every Known. When Kentucky was obeying the first call for her quota of troops, this youngth was earnestly besought by his companions to raise a company, but his reply was, "I will first to learn to be a soldier before I undertake to teach others." He went with the ranks where he has faithfully served as a soldier, until he was wounded on the 8^th at Perryville.

When Young Daniel entered upon his
service in the 15^th Regiment, I requested Col. Pope to pay attention to him for the sake of his noble grandfather, Coleman Daniel, and I made the same request of Lieut. Colonel Jouett, for the sake of the other grandfather, Spencer Cooper of Lexington. Col. Pope has assured me repeatedly, that he is one of the best and most worthy young men he has ever Known, and Lieut. Col. Jouett, gave me Similar assurances, more frequentlly than Col. Pope did, because I saw him oftener. And when this youth was shot in his arm in the battle of the 8^th, hand was compelled to leave the ranks, he tried to carry off his gun, until Lieut. Col. Jouett saw him and considerately told him to drop his gun, and support his wounded arm with his right hand.

I pray your Excellency to consider the merits of this young man for a Lieutenancy of some company in his regiment. I will guarantee that you will never have any cause to regret the act.
