Dear Sir Mr Benjamin M^cGlasson of this County was find $[ ]- ^at theMay term of the Grant Circuit Court^ the amot I do not now Recollect for striking Hannon Childers, and it appears from good evidence that the Jury was, miss led and some of them in fixing the amount of damages, aimed to put down $2. and through-mistake put two (00) to it making $200, which I have understood from the Juryman themselves, some of them supposed that M^cGlasson was sowing wheat upon the land cultivated by Childers which was a mistake & which they have since ascertained, there was a petition drew up to send to the Govenor to get him to remit the fine. Mr E. H. Smith sent it & has not heard from it, M^cGlasson is a very poor man with a large Family -- his wife is nearly helpless -- on account of having her arm broken in three diferent places, he is the owner of fifty acres of hill land & that includes nearly all the property he possesses -- and to collect the fine from him would leave him and his family in a state of starvation, Therefore I want You to see the Govenor & state the facts of the case to him & ascertain if he has Rec^d the petition sent by Smith, please use all the influence You have with him & for Your trouble in so doing you shall be liberally rewarded, if the matter is not attended to immediately I fear Execution will issue agst him which would be his utter ruin let me hear from You soon --
