To his Excellency The Governor of Kentucky --

Your petitioner Elijah B. Adams states that at the May Term 1862 of the Washington Circuit Court -- he was fined sixty dollars upon a charge of Keeping a Tipling House: The facts of the case were these -- Your petitioner is a farmer and raised a quantity of Corn -- he had no distillery of his own and desiring to have his corn made into whisky he hired a neighbor ~~[...]~~ who ran a distillery to take his corn and make it into whisky on the shares -- one half for the other -- which ^he^ did This whisky your Petitioner took to his residence -- and sold ~~out~~ to several of the neighbors by the quart -- As he thought and believed he had a right under the law of the State permitting distillers of their own grain to sell the Whisky make from it in quantities not less Than a quart without a License to do so -- This was his offense He had no desire or purpose to violate the law. Wherefore he asks -- your Excellency to remit said fine.
