To His Excellency The Governor of Kentucky:

Your petitioner, William Murphy, respectfully states that on the 20^th day of February, 1862, an indictment was returned against him in the City ~~Court~~ Court of Louisville, charging him with carrying a concealed weapon; & on the 3^rd March, 1862, the matters of said indictment were tried by a Jury in said Court, and it was proved on said trial, and was true, that on the 5^th day of Febuary, 1862, your petitioner carried a dirk knife, and that, at the time, your petitioner was a teamster in the Employment of the U.S. Government and the driver of an army wagon -- It was not proved, however, that at the very time of finding the weapon on your petitioner, he was Engaged at his work, -- nor was he, as it was after dark. The Jury consequently returned a verdict against your petitioner, finding him guilty & imposing a fine of $50. upon which judgment has been rendered in said Court. Your petitioner has paid of said fine $15. the 30 per cent going to the prosecuting attorney, also the costs of the trial $5. ⁴⁰/₁₀₀ amounting in all to the sum of $20.⁴⁰/₁₀₀, and he prays your Excellency, in tender consideration of the premises & for as much as your petitioner is a young man dependant on his daily labor for support, to remit the balance of the aforesaid judgment. He states that he was never before prosecuted for any offence, and thought that it was no violation of law for him to carry the weapon, as he was, at the time, a teamster for the Military in the U. S. service. Humbly praying your Excellency's Clemency, your petitioner ever will &^c

We are well acquainted with the petitioner W^m Murphy, who is a clever young man & with ^no^ means or way of support Except by his daily labor. We also know & state that he went into Employment as a teamster, (driving an Army wagon) in the U. S. service & was in said service from & during the Month of January & up to and after the 5^th February 1862, when he carried the weapon for which he was indicted and fined as stated in his petition.
