To His Excellency
B. Magoffin

Your petitioner Peter Jordan would respectfully state that about the year 1849 -- or 50, David W Jordan was indicted in the Anderson Circit Court for selling whiskey at some place in Anderson County by the small quantity without licenes. The case was tried in the above named court & a fine of $60 assessed by the Jury the Deft D W Jordan not appearing and making no defense at all: Amt of fine & costs is $75. David W Jordan was a weak minded man and had no very Just conception of right or wrong he was a man in fact who was know to be rather simple & many thought him not responsible for his actions

Your Petitioner would further state that about 9 Months since David Jordan departed this life leaving a very small tract of Hill land and a woman and several small children wholy dependant upon him for a living; and after his death must suffer for something to eat if the land is taken from them which will be done if this fine is paid. he left no means to pay this fine unless his land is sold

Your petitioner would therefore pray that you interpose & relieve the children these troubulous times. hoping you will grant the prayer of your petition

Dear sir

M^r Jordan is in my office & has requested me to [Examine] as to the truth of the statements contained in his petition and I find them all true to the letter. The estate of David Jordan is not sufficient to pay his indebtedness to individuals & also this fine of $60 The sheriff has the fifa for collection, I know there was a helpless family of children which was supported by David Jordan & am satisfied if this land is sold they will suffer for both food & Clothing They can manage to work along and live on this small piece of Hill land but if taken from them these times It is uncertain how much they might have to suffer.

If you can consistently remit the fine It would in the opinion of you my humble friend be a great kindness a proper direction of your Executive Clemency
