To his Excellency B Magoffin Gov of Kentucky=

Your petitioner Martin Hoover, says he is a German & unable to speak the English language. & that he was at the last Term of the Kenton circuit court which has Just closed. tried & convicted of the offence of ~~committing~~ making an assault with intent to commit a rape & fined the sum of fifty dollars & imprisonment in the county Jail for thirty days. He says th woman upon whom he was charged with attempting this rape was a German woman of rather advanced age- He denies that ^he^ever did at any time ap attempt to commit the offence with which he was charged- He says the only Testimony against ^him^ was given by the woman & her husband- all of which was untrue. & he is able to show by all or nearly of those who know the prosecuting witnesses that they are unworthy of beleif- Your petitioner is a man of family having a wife & three children who who are dependent altogether upon
him for a support- Your petitioner has no property whatever except a very small amount household furniture Just enough for the use of his family. The only source from which he derives his & his familys support is from his labor. He says he is a brick maker & was engaged at that business up to the day of his trial. He says his family must suffer if he is not releived & that too immediately for the times have been such that he was unable to make more than a base support for them. & has now no money laid up for them- & except for the charity of friends they would begin to suffer immediately for the necessaries of life-

He therefore asks that you may interpose in his behalf & release him from the Jail & remit his fine &c
