Winchester Ky July 9^th 1861

Last week my nephew George F. Whitehead & myself were trying a Pistol by shooting at a target -- it took place on the evening of the 2^d Inst. in my own pasture lot in the rear of the town, not in proximity to any residence or near where any humans being was at or likely to be and just inside of the town limits of Winchester, and which was in violation of a recent ordinance a bye law of said term, We have confessed judgment for $3⁰⁰ five each ^in the Police Court of Winchester^exclusive of costs, the latter being $4⁵⁰ ~~each~~ against each of us, The violation of the Law was not willful, and we respectfully ask a remission of the fine, and we promise to do no more firing except ~~against~~ we do it in defending our State. Your compliance will oblige Your friend,

I have received the within petition & know it to be true. & hope your Exsellency will remit the fines Our Lincolnites are terribly afraid of ~~for~~ guns They disturbs their dreams & they see grim visaged harried war in everything. yet ~~will~~ we will eventually serve up southern rights notwithstanding our inglorious defeat, please remit the fine

Will do you me the kindness to present the enclosed to his Excll Gov Magoffin. You will see from it, that I have violated ~~the peace & dignity~~ of an ordinance of my goodly village, which I need hardly assure you was unintentional, My nephew G F Whitehead was particeps in the matter we will be [...] $9⁰⁰ ^costs^ exclusive of the fine of $3⁰⁰ each. It is a small matter, but $6⁰⁰ is now as much as $20. was 6 months since. Your attention will oblige.
