To the Hon Beriah Magoffin
Governor of Kentucky

Your Petitioner George Webster of Clark County Kentucky -- respectfully represents that at the November Term 1860 of the Clark Circuit Court Kentucky a Judgment was rendered against him for Twenty Dollars on a charge of Gaming. That he made no defence in court, the facts of the case being as follows -- he was at the Oil Spring in said County for his health, and for pastime with a few friends set down to a little game of Euchre, at which five or ten cents was bet merely to keep a count of the game, no greater sum was bet, and at the close ^of^ playing was not himself winner or losed, and only a small sum total could have been used -- there was no secrecy about the playing, the weather was warm, and the room ^was^ open and the proceeding visible to all of the visitors at the springs who saw proper to look in, and every one knew that it was only for amusement, ~~& to~~ but an envious eye had witnessed the game, & directed the attention of the Grand Jury to it, and they instead of dismissing the matter as frivolous, returned indictment supposing it to be their duty do so, which result had been a matter of serious regret to your Petitioner, it has however learnt ^him^ a lesson not even to play for amusement -- and from that time fourth he has not -- the amount of the fine is only $20= but in these times to a poor hard working man it is a good deal -- and prays your Excellency to remit the judgment, and very greatly oblige
