John Barnes of the County and state above being first duly sworn states that one Claudius Tift (Painter by trade) did on or about the 16^th day of Dec 1864 cin the County of Campbell and state of Kentucky commit a felony, to wit: a Larceny, in this by breaking the seal of a letter, (written by affiant in the City of Nashville Tenn and addressed to "Henry Barnes" affiants Brother residing in Campbell Co Ky) entrusted to the said Tift to deliver and feloniously taking there from the sum of Four Hundred ($400⁰⁰) Dollars in the currency of the United states, which sum of money the said Tift converted to his own use -- that the money was the property of affiant which he was sending to the said Henry Barnes for safe keeping- that said Tift immediately fled the state to La Crosse Wisconsin where he now is.

Affiant further states that the said Tift in a letter mailed from La Crosse Wis having date April 11. 1865, addressed to Col J. P. Jackson of Campbell Co Ky confessed the act complained of and promised to make
restitution of the money stolen which he has failed to do and further affiant saith not.
