To his Excellency
Tho. E. Bramblett Govenor of Kentucky

Your Petitioners James K Polk Gilliland and Allen Gilliland would most respectfully beg leave to state to your Excellency that at the April Term of the Cumberland Circuit Court 1865 Judgment was rendered against them upon a joint indictment for Sixty dollars each for Keeping a Tipling house in Burksville Ky they plead guilty to the Indictment & ^now^ plead guilty. but ask the interposition of your Excellency in their favor in the remission of s^d fine upon the facts. They come from the State of Tennessee to Burskville to engage in some honest avocation for a livelyhood as no hope or Glimering of a hope presented itself to them in Tennessee to make or save anything on reaching Burksville they united their little means purchased a small Stock of Groceries & confectionaries. & commenced selling they found various other process in operation as very few men where then Selling goods & those who were thus engaged soon found that those who bought most paid only in Confederate money then Civil Law was suspended and in as much as the Civil Law could not & did not protect it ought not to be
rigorously enforced against them they were not apprised of the fact that they were violating any law & they paid the Government Tax and in all other respects complied with the laws so far as they knew or were called on, they have long since abandoned the traffic of selling liquor & are now otherwise and better engaged, Wherefore they ask for the remission of said fine or such part thereof as your excellency may diem proper to remit
